For most of our readers, Hameed Akinwande doesn’t require an introduction. In the past year alone, he’s documented some of the best new faces Sydney has to offer, released a spectacular photo book, and, last year, took us backstage at Youkhana’s debut show.
This year, he's back with a lineup of images that will inspire. From patchworked tracksuit jackets at Romance Was Born, a dress made entirely out of Oyster shells at Nicol & Ford, to the best-self-knitted street style look we've ever seen, you'll want to flick through these highlights to the very end. Once you've done that, hear about Hameed's week below.
Name:
Hameed Akinwande
Nickname:
Hameed
Star Sign: Sagittarius
For those who don’t already know you, can you give us your elevator pitch:
My name is Hameed. I’m a photographer and Creative director based in Sydney. I recently published my first photobook titled Let the Boys Play; it’s inspired by my childhood and highlights the importance of creating safe spaces for men to be themselves.
Best song/soundtrack you heard backstage/at a show:
The best song I heard was from Liandra's show ‘Breakout' by Mr P Russel. It was catchy. I had to shazam it.
Best new person you had the pleasure to meet backstage/during the week:
I briefly met Rob Tennent backstage at the Blanca show. He’s an amazing photographer. I love his work.
Top five essentials in your fashion week purse/backpack:
Camera, Flash, Hand cream, water bottle, lip balm and extra batteries for my camera
Coolest (street style) look you saw outside the shows?
I love the way Dalia used the shoes to make her outfit; very creative.
Describe what’s going through your head getting dressed to head to a show:
I was really excited to see what designers have been working on. Sometimes, I prepare myself mentally to meet new people because I’m usually an introvert.
Best TikTok/YouTube/reel/meme to sum up your week:
This was my reaction every time I saw an amazing piece from a designer, especially at RWB.
What are you doing to recoup after fashion week?
Taking some time off to rest and catch up with work. I actually just booked a massage and spa session. Haha
What are you looking forward to the most for Australian Fashion Week next year?
I look forward to seeing more diversity backstage and more interesting offsite shows.
