A Healthy Appetite For Hair Clips In Auckland

Another year has come to pass, but one thing remains: our obsession with hair clips. ‘The more the merrier’ we tend to say when it comes to piling the funnest accessory atop our heads, and we live by the mantra with great fervour.

Turns out we’re not the only ones with a healthy appetite for the cutest (and most functional) accessory trend of them all. Our gal pal Imogen Wilson recently got four clip-enthusiasts together in Auckland, where they revelled in the wonder of the shiny accessories, before Lula took their picture and asked them a whole bunch of questions about life in New Zealand and beyond.

Where are you from originally, and where do you live now?: 
I was born in NZ, but both my parents were born in different countries. My mum was born in Malaysia and my dad was born in England. I live in Auckland.

Where would you take someone visiting your hometown for the first time? 
The Skytower. 

Best places to eat, shop and drink where you’re from?
Elliot Stables to eat, Queen Street to shop, and Tank to drink.

What are you most excited for over summer in NZ? 
Swimming in the sea and boogie boarding.

What were your favourite hair accessories growing up? 
Headbands. 

Best thing to happen to you in 2018?
Going to Malaysia to visit my family.

Favourite travel destination? 
Norway. 

Favourite Netflix show at the moment?
That 70’s Show.

Best book you’ve read recently? 
‘The DUFF’ by Kody Keplinger.

Where are you from originally, and where do you live now? 
I’m from Auckland and I live there now, too. 

Where would you take someone visiting your hometown for the first time?
I’d probably take them to meet my friends or to go get a coffee somewhere.

Best places to eat, shop and drink where you’re from? 
The Burgerie on K Road is a fish and chip/burger shop that has a folder full of vegan options that have that yum fake meat stuff inside them. Shopping-wise, Dominion Road has a lot of op shops real close to each other if you like secondhand clothes. 

What are you most excited for over summer in NZ? 
Drinking beers at the beach and getting out of Auckland. 

What were your favourite hair accessories growing up? 
I remember when every kid had these scene-style mini ribbon bows that clipped onto their hair—I really liked those.

Best thing to happen to you in 2018? 
Probably witnessing the inner growth taking place in me and in the people around me.

Favourite travel destination? 
Well I haven’t been to too many places, but I went to Australia and had a great time.

Favourite Netflix show at the moment? 
My comfort shows are trashy crime shows so pretty much all the ones on Netflix like that are my favourites.

Best book you’ve read recently? 
‘In Cold Blood’ by Truman Capote. It’s one of those books that actually top the hype surrounding it.

Where are you from originally, and where do you live now?
Born in Auckland and living in Auckland :). 

Where would you take someone visiting your hometown for the first time?
Probably up one of our beautiful mountains.

Best places to eat, shop and drink where you’re from? 
K Road has got some good bars and stores, and I often go to somewhere in Balmoral or Kingsland for some tasty but not too pricey food.

What are you most excited for over summer in NZ?
Getting out of the city to go camping while it’s good weather and going to some festivals!

What were your favourite hair accessories growing up? 
Probably a sparkly snap clip or some funky-looking hair ties. 

Best thing to happen to you in 2018? 
I'm too busy worrying about what's gonna happen in 2019 to remember what's happened in 2018 😌. 

Favourite travel destination? 
Probably somewhere nice in the Coromandel. 

Favourite Netflix show at the moment? 
Enjoying Peaky Blinders at the moment :)

Best book you've read recently? 
‘The Rules of Attraction’ by Bret Easton Ellis.

Nickname: Malea

Where are you from originally, and where do you live now?
Born in Berlin and grew up in Luxembourg. I haven’t decided where to live next—it depends on which University I get into. 

Where would you take someone visiting your hometown for the first time? 
To my favourite café, have a little walk in the public gardens near the river and go to a techno club in the evening.

Best places to eat, shop and drink where you’re from?
Konrad Café/Bar to have a drink.

What are you most excited for over summer in NZ? 
To give myself to the ocean.

What were your favourite hair accessories growing up? 
I had really a cute barrette with cherries on it. 

Best thing to happen to you in 2018?
I graduated and then experienced total freedom during my solo travels.

Favourite travel destination? 
I don’t have a favourite travel destination, but I like to be alone on the beach. But, I also like beach clubs.

Favourite Netflix show at the moment?
I liked the documentary, The Black Panthers. Favourite series would be She’s Gotta Have It and Dogs of Berlin

Best book you’ve read recently? 
‘Soulmates’ by Jessica Grouse.

Where are you from originally, and where do you live now? 
Auckland forever. 

Where would you take someone visiting your hometown for the first time?
Karekare, my favourite beach.

Best places to eat, shop and drink where you’re from?
Big J's Takeaway for food, Panmure op shops for shopping, byo at Myers park for drink.

What are you most excited for over summer in NZ?
Fucking luscious pohutukawa trees, naked swims, barefoot walks to the dairy, long days, menthol durries+sangria combination, forcing pals into playing Capture the Flag.

What were your favourite hair accessories growing up?
Those hair clips with the large claws, borrowed from my ma of course.

Best thing to happen to you in 2018?
Made incredible friends.

Tokyo!

Gilmore Girls

‘Jitterbug Perfume’ by Tom Robbins which I am currently halfway through.
