Armani

Sydney

— July 26, 2021 —

You know how it goes. You’re at a party, someone’s taking pics, they tag you on social, and next minute you’re a full-blown bona fide fashion model. You know, that old chestnut.

We kid, obvs. That kind of origin story is a rare occurrence in reality and not exactly something you can bank on as a pathway to a career in fashion. Rare it may be, however, it’s a true story for the Byron-bred beauty you see before you.

Meet Armani, the self-assured newcomer who’s establishing a presence for herself in the modelling world even amidst pandemic-era lockdowns and ever-changing travel restrictions, and for that we are impressed.

“I’ve always been very interested in fashion,” she tells us. “I'm excited to see where my modelling career goes in 2021.”

“I first got involved in modelling after meeting a photographer at a party in Byron Bay. He posted some photos on Instagram, and I started getting approached. Then I met my agency through a photo shoot my friends were running in Melbourne last year.”

Outside of modelling, Armani also loves to sing (“although it's taking a back seat at the moment”) and spend time with her friends. Her favourite meal is mac and cheese (same, tbh) and her morning routine starts off with scrolling on Instagram over a cup of coffee. She’s tried giving up social media before but it didn’t take. “I don't think I could do it.” On that we can definitely relate.

Lucky for us, she made it to Sydney just before the city’s latest lockdown to team up with photographer Joe Brennan and stylist Imogen Wilson on a visual tribute to high fashion in the high-noon sunlight. Get inspired to catch some rays (and look fabulous doing it), then get to know Armani and peep her local’s guide to Byron Bay.

How did your upbringing help shape your worldview?
Growing up the way I did, I learnt to be resilient and not let strangers' opinions get to me.

Do you consider yourself a spiritual person?
No, not really. I'm actually an atheist.

What is your idea of happiness?
Freedom in every way.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I'm definitely a night owl.

How can we make the most of our time on Earth?
Having a positive impact on other people.

Can you recall reading, watching or listening to something that completely changed your mind on something?
Watching Paris is Burning when I was in high school made me realise there was something out there for me and who I was.

Are there any social or cultural shifts you hope will happen in the next 10 years?
I hope that we continue to shift towards LGBT acceptance, especially the acceptance of transwomen.

The ideal Byron day is... a beach walk in the morning, then coffee, then relaxing during the day, and then heading out to see friends.

The best spot for first-time visitors is... the lighthouse to see the view — it’s the best part of Byron.

The best place to unwind is... the beach with a book or some good music.

The best place to read a book/mag is... Wategos Beach.

The best spot for a cheap feed is... Japonaise Kitchen.

The best spot for an afternoon drink is... Raes on Wategos.

The best place for a dance is.. any Kombi Kollective event.

The best place for brunch the morning after dancing is... Bayleaf Cafe.

And the cutest date spot is... definitely the beach.
