Four Boys, Four Japanese Designers and a Whole Lotta Heart Eyes Emoji

Sydney

— June 5, 2019 —

We recently bundled up a bag of sartorial treats from our favourite Japanese menswear designers and took to the streets of Sydney with four fresh faces in tow. If you think that sounds like a mouthful, then just wait for the visual feast coming at you live and direct from the gallery above! Om nom nom.

Zephyr, Otis, Harrison and Oliver were there to do justice to labels Kapital, Needles, Flagstuff, and Wacko Maria, while fresh photographer Julian Schulz captured it with his magic lens. While we were hanging out with the crew of angelic humans, we asked some pretty hard-hitting questions like what their Google search history looks like and their preferred way to spend 24 hours in Sydney. Get acquainted with da bois below!"

Harrison

Can you give us the Harrison elevator pitch?
So, firstly my name is Harrison, but I usually go by Harry. I sculpt, specifically bricolage. Right now, I'm working on a series of party starters, boom boxes, goon sack accessories, and contemporary Australian rituals solidified with alcohol.

What was the last thing you Googled?
Very small Pingu snow globe.

What do you think is the best way to spend 24 hours in Sydney?
I really love cooking, so I start my day in the kitchen whenever I can. It's not always glamorous! Ingredients are key to cooking, and some of my favourite places for ingredients are the Carriage works farmers market, and the Sydney fish markets. Keeping waste to a minimum is key—I'm really grateful that lots of places in Sydney are onboard and eating seasonally makes everything taste a million times better. If you're not looking to cook, Lentil as Anything can be an oasis of good affordable food. So, after eating my way around the inner west I love to unwind either at home and continue building my studio or by catching up with some friends for a drink and one or two helpings of dinner.

If you could time travel to any time, past or present, where would you go and why?
Without a doubt, 1960s Malta—who wouldn't want to be in the middle of the Mediterranean in the 60s?

What cultural changes do you hope to see happen in the next 10 years?
Honestly, I can only hope we as a world population get our act together so we're still here in the next 10 years. Cultural changes in the next 10 minutes though? We need to be taking the current climate crisis seriously.

Coolest thing you learned recently?
Mike Myers is both Austin Powers and Dr Evil and I don't know how to cope knowing that.

If someone were to make a film about your life, who’d play you and why?
Peter Sellers. The Party played a very large part in my childhood.

Favourite book?
‘Alexander McQueen Unseen’.

Movie?
The Italian Job.

Music?
‘We Don't Care’ by Vampire Sound Inc.

What does ‘cool’ mean to you?
Cool means being truthful, passionate and handmade.

Zephyr

Can you give us your elevator pitch?
My name is Zephyr and I am currently finishing my last year of school. I work part time in my parent’s fashion store ‘The Standard Store’ and have been doing a bit of modelling on the side since the beginning of the year.

What was the last thing you Googled?
The last thing I googled was ‘How to cook pasta?’. I was home alone over the weekend and had to survive…

What do you think is the best way to spend 24 hours in Sydney?
A perfect day in Sydney would definitely start with a big sleep in, followed by a swim in the ocean down at one of the coast’s jump rocks. For lunch, a trip into Chinatown for some Asian food would be ideal and to end the perfect day, a social down at the harbour with some friends.

If you could time travel to any time, past or present, where would you go and why?
If I could I go back in time to any place, I would probably go back to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa to tell Ghana’s football team not to sky their winning penalty, which would have sent them through to the semi-finals, making them the first African country to make it to a World Cup semi-final!

What cultural changes do you hope to see happen in the next 10 years?
In the next 10 years I hope to see a major stop to gun violence.

Coolest thing you learned recently?
The coolest thing I’ve learnt recently is how to cook pasta.

If someone were to make a film about your life, who’d play you and why?
Not that I’m anything like him, but, if someone were to make a movie on me, Jaden Smith would play me because a couple years ago, when I was in a bar with my family and friends in Japan, two drunk girls thought I was him and asked to take a photo…

Favourite book?
I don’t read often, only for school, but my favourite book would have to be ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.

Movie?
My favourite movie right now, although it’s constantly changing, is Kill Bill: Vol.1.

Music?
And favourite song right now is ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’.

What does ‘cool’ mean to you?
To me, ‘cool’ is to stand out in a crowd where everything looks to be the same.

Oliver

Can you give us the Oliver elevator pitch?
My name is Oliver. I’m a fun, funny guy who is always keen for a laugh and who likes to do some crazy stuff that makes everything more fun.

What was the last thing you Googled?
The last thing I Googled was flights to Berlin.

What do you think is the best way to spend 24 hours in Sydney?
The best way to spend 24hrs in Sydney is to wake up early and go for a surf or swim, then chill at the beach all day with food, drinks and friends, then watch the sunset, and after that go out with your mates to a pub, venue or event.

If you could time travel to any time, past or present, where would you go and why?
I would time travel to the 70s and 80s because the clothes they wore were sick and the hairstyles they had were cool, and I would like to try to see what I look like with a mullet ;).

What cultural changes do you hope to see happen in the next 10 years?
Some cultural changes that I would like to see is less internet. What I mean by that is more person-to-person connections and a steer away from a more technology-obsessed world, even though it brings many advantages.

Coolest thing you learned recently?
The coolest thing I learned recently is that the trick to having a good body is that it is 70% food and 30% exercise.

If someone were to make a film about your life, who’d play you and why?
I would like Leonardo DiCaprio to play me—I think we have the same sense of humour and would do the same things and he would play me very well.

Favourite book?
Favourite book would have to be 'The Da Vinci Code'

Movie?
My favourite movie right now would probably be Creed II.

Music?
I don't really have any favourite music—I listen to all kinds of genres, depending on what kind of mood I'm in, but if I had to say right now it would be Frank Ocean.

What does ‘cool’ mean to you?
'Cool' means someone who is funny, fun, in control, knows how to get what he/she wants, isn't desperate and can have fun with anyone.

Otis

Can you give us the Otis elevator pitch?
I’m Otis :) and I’m from Bondi. I recently signed with Priscillas, which has been really sick, and I also just finished an Australian feature film called Bilched, which has just come out. You should check it out! I love to skate and play music—it’s always been my thing.

What was the last thing you Googled?
What elevator pitch means [laughs].

What do you think is the best way to spend 24 hours in Sydney?
For me, hanging with my bestie Tfox and swimming at all the little harbour beaches—I love them. Eating at yummy restaurants, laughing, surfing, skating. I kind of love doing a lot of stuff around Sydney, there is so much to do.

If you could time travel to any time, past or present, where would you go and why?
Definitely the Wild West. I’ve always had a weird obsession with being a cowboy and something about travelling horseback throughout the West sounds so sick.

What cultural changes do you hope to see happen in the next 10 years?
I think there’s a major disconnection within the community of my generation, surrounding social media. I hope to see a future with authenticity and realness as I feel like (due to these online platforms) people’s lives are drifting further and further from reality. I also hope to see active and progressive change with the environment.

Coolest thing you learned recently?
We have 10x more bacterial cells that inhabit us than human cells. Which kinda makes us more bacteria than human 🙂.

If someone were to make a film about your life, who’d play you and why?
My mum. She knows me best.

Favourite book?
‘The Outsiders’.

Movie?
The Man From Snowy River.

Music?
Changes so much, I listen to everything.

What does ‘cool’ mean to you?
Someone who is: an individual, outgoing, caring and who isn’t too caught up with nonsense.
