Chilling With 5 Honeys In Los Angeles

Los Angeles

— April 18, 2018 —

We recently made the sunny sojourn over to Los Angeles—the land of endless summer days, clean living, beautiful beaches, even more beautiful people, and, of course, best ever TV show The OC. Needless to say, we had an absolute ball.

In between sampling various vegan doughnuts and basking in the soft warm glow of the star-studded town, we chilled with/befriended five local gals. The key to making new friends, it would seem, is by dressing them up in the cutest clothes you can find and then firing off a million questions—from their favourite spots to hang out at in LA, to the changes they wish to see in the industry.

Find out more about LA and its angelic inhabitants below, then lose yourself in the above gallery!

What’s your favourite thing about living in LA?
All the freedom and creative people in the city. And the restaurants!

What do you think the biggest misconception about LA is?
People always expect it to be hot and sunny, but sometimes it can get pretty chilly!

2018 is the year of the dog.

Where are your favourite places to eat, shop and drink in LA?
I love shopping down at the promenade in Santa Monica—any store you can think of is there. My favorite places to eat are Lula Cocina Mexicana and Le Macaron French Pastries (it has the best macarons!)

What do you love most about modelling, and what changes do you think need to happen in the industry?
My favorite thing about modeling is getting to show my creativity and passion in pictures. I like the industry just how it is!

What book, movie, or song has had the biggest impact on you, and why?
I was really impacted by the movie Girl Interrupted, because it’s about a group of girls overcoming really difficult obstacles, and some become better people by the end of the movie, and some never change.

What is the best joke you’ve ever heard?
Q: Why do bees have sticky hair?
A: Because they use honeycombs.

Claudia Martinez

What’s your favourite thing about living in LA?
My favorite thing about living in LA is hands down the weather. I grew up living in Miami, so I’m accustomed to the warm weather, but there it gets really humid. In LA it isn’t humid at all, but still warm, and it barely ever rains. Just how I like it—best of all 3 worlds!

What do you think the biggest misconception about LA is?
The biggest misconception about L.A. and its inhabitants is that everyone is “fake”. Fake people are everywhere, no matter which state or country. If anything, I would say most of the people I have crossed paths with have been genuine.

2018 is the year of the go-getters!

Where are your favourite places to eat, shop and drink in LA?
Wow! LA has to be my favorite city to go out to eat. I am vegan so the options are limitless. I love Real Food Daily, Seabirds Kitchen, and for dessert, Yoga-urt

What do you love most about modelling, and what changes do you think need to happen in the industry?
The factor I love most about modeling is how it enables to allow your creativity to flow. From the runway and commercials to editorials and campaigns, everyone’s input is based on creative ideas that are put together, no matter the type of modeling. I always get a kick of seeing the end result.

One of the changes that need to happen in this industry is for it to be more diverse. I find beauty in uniqueness!

What book, movie, or song has had the biggest impact on you, and why?
Eat, Pray, Love is definitely one of my all-time favorites. This movie has allowed me to view life in a different perspective and learn to enjoy the present moment. There is more to life than just money and fame! I believe that this movie is a great example of how to appreciate the little things that we take for granted everyday, because in reality these are the things that make us happy. Everything materialistic is temporary happiness.

What is the best joke you’ve ever heard?
All my funny jokes personal ones with friends that no one else would probably laugh at!

What’s your favourite thing about living in LA?
The weather!

What do you think the biggest misconception about LA is?
Everyone told me that I wouldn’t like the people here, but all I’ve had is positive experiences with great people!

2018 is the year of the woman!

Where are your favourite places to eat, shop and drink in LA?
I don’t have any favourite places to eat or drink here in particular, but I will say that the options here for food are phenomenal! LA has everything! For shopping, there are also a lot of great places, but I love The Grove and Century City mall.

What do you love most about modelling, and what changes do you think need to happen in the industry?
I love meeting new people, the fashion, and of course, travelling with my job. Changes that need to happen are: equality, and the relationships between agents and models, models and clients, and models towards each other.

There’s a lot of inequality and power struggles, where we aren’t seen or heard as humans with rights, in both our jobs and society, and this needs to change.

What book, movie, or song has had the biggest impact on you, and why?
There’s too many to name. I’m impacted on a daily basis by what I see, read, and hear from others. A go-to on my playlist for the longest time though is ‘Get You’ by Daniel Caesar!

What is the best joke you’ve ever heard?
I can’t remember the last time somebody told me a joke! But I’m always laughing—I think I might be the punchline every time, [laughs].

Squid (AKA Sydney)

What’s your favourite thing about living in LA?
Being surrounded by great vibes and sunshine, and meeting so many wonderfully different people everyday.

What do you think the biggest misconception about LA is?
I haven’t heard much, but I heard once on the East Coast that people from LA are very closed-minded and not very open to things. In reality, they’re actually ten times more accepting of people and who they are, where they come from, and what they’re trying to be than some of the people on the East Coast that I’ve met.

Finish this sentence:
2018 is the year of PUSSY POWER!

Where are your favourite places to eat, shop and drink in LA?
Definitely Sugarfish to eat, The Grove is one of my favorites to shop at because it has everything, and Catch is my favorite place for drinks because they make the best Moscow Mule I’ve had, hands down.

What do you love most about modelling, and what changes do you think need to happen in the industry?
I absolutely love the fact that you can basically create art out of nothing more than a few pieces of material, a human, a background, and a camera. You can reach and move audiences through photos without even having to say a word. It’s honestly such an empowering career to have because you have such an incredible influence on pretty much the entire world—people look up to you, and once you capture an audience, you have the opportunity to make a difference in the world that you never thought was possible.

I do think that the industry could focus more on the art aspect of things, instead of social media moguls so much. There is such a disconnect from reality right now, and I think it’s actually doing more harm to society than good. But at the same time, social media is so helpful in boosting modeling careers and influential platforms, so I do still understand why it is so prominent in the industry right now.

What book, movie, or song has had the biggest impact on you, and why?
‘Girl Boss’ by Sophia Amoruso has definitely been the biggest influence in my life, especially in this career. The words in her book carry so much power, as does the fact that she built a multi-million dollar company out of a garage, seeking vintage clothing with her friends. You can accomplish anything you set your mind to, and after reading her book, I’ve always kept that in the back of my mind for motivation. So far, so good.

What is the best joke you’ve ever heard?
To tell you the truth, I don’t remember many of the jokes I’ve heard in my life—there have been so many. My mum and my little brothers have always said some pretty corny things that always make me laugh like the one below.
Q: “Why do we tell actors to break a leg?”
A: “Because every play has a cast”

[Laughs]. The fact that my mom says it and cracks herself up makes it ten times funnier for me!

Wallice

What’s your favourite thing about living in LA?
I absolutely love the weather (however, as I write this, it has been raining on-and-off for a week, and I’m not a big fan). Either that or the diversity (and food that comes with it) here.

What do you think the biggest misconception about LA is?
I think it’s only half-true that everyone hikes, drinks green juices, and wears exercise clothes everywhere...

2018 is the year of the woman.

Where are your favourite places to eat, shop and drink in LA?
I love the Silver Lake and Echo Park areas. There’s a Taiwanese place called Pine and Crane, and it has really amazing food and boba. There is also Pho Cafe, which has some really great boutique shops around. A close second is Highland Park because I am a dessert fiend, and then my favorite ice cream place Scoops is right next to my favorite donut place, Donut Friend.

What do you love most about modelling, and what changes do you think need to happen in the industry?
I love meeting so many amazing people through modeling. I’ve met some really great photographers and creatives through Instagram that have come to be amazing friends.  I think the industry definitely needs change, and we are moving toward it right now in terms of acceptance of all races, genders, and sizes. I’ve noticed especially in LA there are many models that look a certain way that isn’t similar to me, and though they are beautiful, I think it’s time to see more diversity. I believe a lot of designers and artists are turning toward this idea of more “unique” faces and turning away from the “model standard” that has been around for so long. I’m excited to see where this industry is headed.

What book, movie, or song has had the biggest impact on you, and why?

When I heard ‘Video Games’ by Lana Del Rey in 2011, it honestly changed my life. I grew up in school orchestra and bands, loving music, but hearing Lana sing really made me want to sing and create my own music. Since then, I’ve pursued music as a career.

What is the best joke you’ve ever heard?
I’m a sucker for corny music or dad jokes, but no specific one comes to mind at the moment, unfortunately!
